When people are talking about science and art, they normally distinguish these two categories and deeply believe that science and art completely have no connections; because science is all about patterns, observation, deduction and objectiveness; whereas, art is a subject which bases on pure imagination, creativity and subjectiveness. Therefore, one question emerges: How on earth do these two opposite subjects relate to each other?
Before answering this aforementioned question, it is necessary for us to think out of the box and to be genuinely objective in order to avoid the stereotypical definition of these two subjects. First of all, is science merely about experiments and fixed rules? Is science created to be the summary and conclusion of the laws and patterns in nature or the universe? Is there any chance for science to have somewhat artistic elements in it? Personally, I think the answers to these questions are quite thought-provoking and eye-opening; because the fact is science does has a lot in common with art. The most reputable and well-known scientist meanwhile an artist — Leonardo da Vinci might be able to explain to us.
Leonardo da Vinci was an all-powerful person, he probably is the only man on earth who has so many title - artist, mathematician, physician, inventor and biologist; also, the only man who was so skillful at combining art with science and who discovered the appealing world within science and art. Leonardo came up with the world’s first blueprint of a aircraft model, this was back in the end Middle Age when everything was depressed by the church and people’s minds were not as creative and open-minded; nonetheless, he invented the model of a flying machine which had a pair of symmetrical wings and streamline shaped body. All of the details of this aircraft were perfectly artistic and proportionally beautiful, even though he didn’t manage to build that aircraft, the blueprint itself was already a masterpiece of imagination blended in solid scientific reasons. Can we say that invention was based on the previous scientific discoveries or fixed laws or experiments? In that period of time, building an aircraft was deemed unrealistic and “artistic”, which means it supposed to be in the imaginary world of art rather than our real life. However, Leonardo has taken the brave step of making the art work real by using scientific approaches, his action is now regarded as the touch of fingertips between science and art. He introduced us a brand new world in which science and art can improve each other and apply on one another; whereupon now we can see a world full of creativity and shocking ideas.
Science is not all about facts, it can be used for creating something new or seemed impossible, science is for human to create diverse and various inventions and most of those inventions stem from an artistic brain; science can be subjective sometimes. Art is not all about imagination and abstraction, after all, our brains only produce what we’ve perceived in the past; some art works may have plenty of science essence in them. Likewise, art can be subjective in a sense.
